On my investigative reporting pieces, I did most of the reporting on my own time. I had newscasts to produce and stories to write, I didn’t have time to do the dogged detailed work that is necessary for real investigative reporting.
I had high standards and wanted to do reports that would withstand the test of time. And if the extra effort resulted in a quality piece, It was worth it to me.
KGO Radio gave me something very valuable — airtime. Most radio news stories ran 40 seconds or less. My pieces sometimes topped four minutes, an eternity in radio.
The extra time allowed me to go in-depth and report on difficult issues like the abuse of patients in nursing homes.
